Dr. Rainer Detsch — Institute of Biomaterials, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

Monday, 22nd July — 9AM - 12PM

AI and Machine Learning Crash Course: Basics and Beyond

This workshop provides a concise yet comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of AI, machine learning, and deep learning, highlighting their key distinctions. You will be able to gain insights into the underlying principles that make these technologies powerful and learn about conditions for successful (or unsuccessful) implementation. Through practical examples spanning various application domains, you will be able to not only grasp the theoretical concepts but also appreciate how AI, machine learning, and deep learning are transforming applications from image analysis to protein folding and are solving real-world problems – and why they are still not a one-fits-all solution. We will also briefly touch on best practices when applying machine learning in your own research.

Organizers

Prof. Dr. Katharina Breininger — Department for Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering (AIBE), Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

Monday, 22nd July — 2PM - 5PM

Advanced Diagnostics by Using AI Methods

The 'Advanced Diagnostics' workshop offers an in-depth examination of AI solutions, including Deep Learning, within the voice and swallowing research domain. Equip yourself with the latest knowledge and advancements that are setting new benchmarks in image analysis. The workshop provides a comprehensive theoretical overview and is entangled with a hands-on session training your own deep neural network.

Organizers

Prof. Dr. Andreas Kist — Department for Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering (AIBE), Technical Faculty, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

Monday, 22nd July — 2PM - 5PM

Engineering and Analytics of Polymer Implants

The increasing significance of polymers in medical applications, particularly implants, necessitates new approaches for identifying the interaction of the processing, analysis, and qualification. Within the workshop at the institute of polymer technology, the participants will obtain insights into the fundamentals of polymer processing and its impact on material and implant properties. These will be complemented by insights into methodologies for analyzing and testing chemical and physical characteristics of polymer-based implants.

Organizers

Prof. Dr. Dietmar Drummer — Institute of Polymer Technology, Technical Faculty, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

Samuel Schlicht M.Sc. — Institute of Polymer Technology, Technical Faculty, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

Tuesday, 23rd July — 9AM - 12PM

Females in Science – Forging your Own Path as a Clinician/Researcher

As a speech pathologist with a passion for research, Cate Madill has followed her own successful and unique path in academia at the same time maintaining a clinical caseload. In this workshop, Cate will share aspects of her own journey and guide participants through a process of identifying their own unique strengths, preferences and attributes that will inform and support their career development in clinical science, research and/or academia.

Organizers

Prof. Dr. Cate Madill — Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney, Australia

Tuesday, 23rd July — 9AM - 12PM

Experimental Larynx Models

The workshop will focus on experimental models of the larynx and their specific field of application. There are basically two types of models, ex-vivo animal or human larynx models and fully synthetic models. The characteristic advantages and disadvantages of the different models are discussed and demonstrated in theoretical and practical presentations. During the practical part, it will be possible to explore the differences in the laryngeal anatomy of different species (e.g. porcine, ovine, canine, human).

Organizers

Dr. Marion Semmler — Division of Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology, Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

PD Dr. Stefan Kniesburges — Division of Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology, Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

Dr.-Ing. Bernhard Jakubaß — Division of Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology, Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

Tuesday, 23rd July — 2PM - 5PM

Clinical Measurement of Professional Singers

Clinical voice assessment of professional singers is particularly challenging because most singers exceed the limits of commonly used measurement scales. The workshop introduces concepts and limitations of clinical voice measurement for this special category of voice users.

Organizers

Prof. Dr. Matthias Echternach — Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU)

Tuesday, 23rd July — 2PM - 5PM

Numerical Larynx Models

The workshop will highlight the complex challenges to model the phonation process numerically by methods of continuum mechanics. Starting with the physical characteristics of the fluid-structure-acoustic coupled process of human phonation, the different modeling strategies are presented within theoretical presentations and demonstrations of simulation cases. Beside the presentations, the workshop will provide the possibility for the participants to discuss concrete challenges and problems in simulating the process.

Organizers

Prof. Dr. techn. Stefan Schoder — Institute of Fundamentals and Theory in Electrical Engineering (IGTE), Graz University of Technology, Austria

Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Falk — Siemens PLM Software
